FatCow Sucks?

Does FatCow Support Cron Jobs?

Cron enables users to schedule jobs (commands or shell scripts) to run automatically at specific intervals. You set it and forget it. Cron jobs are becoming more and more common, and allow you to perform very useful scheduling tasks, such as:

  • Pinging your website to see if its up every hour
  • Backing up your MySQL database every day at midnight
  • Sending emails to your newsletter subscribers every week
  • Running a script to clean up your old files every month

In addition to using cron for common tasks, some of the most popular scripts use cron jobs, including WordPress, Drupal, Joomla!, etc.

So, Does FatCow Support Cron Jobs?

Unfortunately, FatCow does not support cron jobs. I’m not sure if they don’t support it because of their custom control panel, or because they just don’t offer the feature itself. I searched their control panel, their website, and asked their support team just to be certain, and sure enough, FatCow doesn’t support cron jobs. If you absolutely need to have cron jobs, then FatCow is not for you.

I’ve seen a lot of people call FatCow a scam in the past few months, and I’m going to explain why they did.

Is FatCow a Scam?

FatCow is not a scam, the bottom line is that all web hosts, no matter how great, are going to have problems. Some problems are going to be fixed right away, and some problems are going to take longer.  It’s how a host deals with the problems that tells whether they are good or not.

I guarantee you that almost every web hosts has negative reviews. Why? Because people who are unsatisfied feel the need to show their anger. FatCow does have the occasional negative review, but most of their reviews, whether good or bad, state that customer service or tech guys at FatCow tried their best to solve the problem at hand.

What’s the Catch?

Although FatCow is a great host, you do have to watch out for the following catches:

  • You have to pay an yearly fee, instead of a monthly fee. Their prices are very affordable (especially with our 50% off coupon) even with the yearly fee, so this isn’t a big deal.
  • From their Terms of Service:

    Refunds made for a thirty (30) day money-back guarantee will not include domain registration fees or setup fees, nor will they include any fees for additional services that are purchased in the first thirty (30) days.

    It says that they will not cover the domain fee, any setup fees, or additional services in the refund!

  • Lastly, this last “scam” has nothing to do with FatCow. Some people are scared about using their credit card online. What I recommend doing is buying a Gift Card (Visa or MasterCard) from your local store, and using that for the purchase. It’s safer, but you have to pay a ~$5 fee when you buy the card.

In the end, we recommend FatCow, and are pleased to say that they are not a scam, but do have some catches that you have to watch out for.

What are the FatCow NameServers?

Have you already registered your domain name, and want to use FatCow as your web host? Not a problem. FatCow allows you to host unlimited domains. Here’s how you set them up.

Updating your nameservers for FatCow

Every domain registrar has a different process for updating/changing your domains nameservers, however they are all done basically the same way. Look for something in the lines of “DNS Information”  Update Nameservers” or “Set Nameservers”. After you find the settings, change your nameservers to the name servers you see below.

Set your nameservers to:

  • ns1.fatcow.com
  • ns2.fatcow.com

DNS can take up to 48 hours to propagate, or complete. If you already own a domain, I would suggest changing your nameservers before applying for an account, just so you can start working on your website the day you sign up.
